On Tuesday night I had the privilege of attending the 11th graduating ceremony of the Center for Independent Living of Broward’s Leadership Class.
Michael, Tommy, Sue and Billie (pictured above left to right), completed a 6-month, intensive program where they grew their skills in advocacy and self-empowerment.
While all of them noted they were very nervous having to give a small speech at the graduation, they did fantastic, and we could not be prouder of them.
So what do I mean when I say this experience encapsulates the spirt of FIL?
FIL is about growth and constantly moving forward. Nobody just sits on their laurels. We want to expose our residents to new experiences, challenge their notions of what they can and cannot do, and yes, at times push them out of their comfort zone because that is where we all grow.
None of that, though, happens without the guidance, support and loving care of our staff. Danna James-Cooper, Training and Employment Manager, is the proud leader of this group, and this ceremony shows that when it all comes together in perfect harmony, magical things happen.
Tuesday night was magical because FIL is magical.
