About Us

Our Story

When the Bederman’s and Mishner’s met, they realized that their loved ones with disabilities were too independent to live at home but not independent enough to live on their own without supports. Pushing aside the prescribed notions of what should be done, they created a vision of an integrated community where Michael and Luise could flourish. Not a program, or a facility, but a true home of their own.

Opened in 1985, the Foundation for Independent Living continues to build upon the legacy of these two forward thinking families. Located in beautiful Coconut Creek, Florida since 1992, the Foundation for Independent Living – or FIL as it is affectionately known – has remained committed to assisting individuals gain independence, strive towards their dreams, and flourish in the place they live. Hundreds have enjoyed calling FIL home, whether for a short time, or since our doors opened. While constantly evolving, FIL has never lost that initial vision of a professional staff and Board, involved families, and most importantly self-advocating residents, all working together towards a singular goal of creating a resident empowered community.

That was FIL then. That is FIL now.

Don’t you want to be part of it?
