About Us

From a Chance Encounter to a Thriving Community

More than 40 years ago, two families crossed paths in a movie theater lobby and discovered a shared dream: to give their children with cognitive disabilities the chance to live with dignity and independence. What started as a hopeful conversation between the Bedermans and Mishners soon grew into late-night phone calls, newspaper ads and weekly gatherings fueled by determination and care.

Six months later, the Foundation for Independent Living opened its doors. The very first residents moved into a modest apartment and began a journey toward self-reliance that would inspire an entire community.

Since then, FIL has blossomed into a vibrant home where adults with cognitive and physical disabilities find not only support but the freedom to build their own futures. Here, your loved one learns essential life skills, pursues meaningful work or volunteer roles and forms lifelong friendships. Families tell us that opening these doors transforms worry into confidence and uncertainty into possibility.

We honor the vision of those first two families in every program we offer: personalized coaching, adaptive wellness activities, vocational training and a genuine community that celebrates each milestone. If you’re seeking a place where your family member is seen, respected and empowered to thrive, we welcome you to discover FIL—where independence isn’t just encouraged, it becomes reality.

Turning Potential into Reality

At the Foundation for Independent Living (FIL), we partner with adults who are ready to embrace greater independence, purpose and confidence. Your family member arrives with unique dreams, strengths and needs. Our community honors each individual’s journey toward growth, self-worth and meaningful connections.

We understand that you seek more than just care. You want a home where your loved one is empowered to make choices, discover new passions and experience life on their terms. Whether they join our residential program at Cypress Shores or participate in our non-residential day services, they receive respect, encouragement and a support team committed to their personal goals.

Every aspect of FIL, from life coaching and vocational training to wellness activities and community events, is designed around the people we serve. We believe in dignity for all and build opportunities that allow each resident to be seen and supported for who they are.

At FIL, we do not just see a diagnosis; we see your loved one’s potential. Let us help them write the next chapter of their story.

A Community That Feels Like Family

We believe every person brings something special to our community. Residents come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, yet they share one goal: to live with greater independence, confidence and purpose.

We know true independence is more than mastering daily tasks; it is about honoring each individual’s voice, celebrating their strengths and opening doors to growth. Our team works side-by-side with residents and families from day one. Together we create a plan that builds life skills, fosters social connections and encourages self-advocacy.

Your family is part of ours. We involve loved ones in every step, listening to your hopes, answering your questions and welcoming your input as essential partners in your loved one’s journey. Whether it’s exploring vocational opportunities, joining adaptive fitness classes or discovering new talents through music and art therapy, we design every program to reflect each resident’s passions and potential.

FIL stands for more than a place to live; it is a place to belong, learn, and thrive. Our residents gain the tools they need to lead fulfilling lives, and our families gain peace of mind knowing their loved ones are valued, supported and empowered to achieve more than they ever imagined.

If you are seeking a program where care meets opportunity and every success, big or small, is celebrated, FIL welcomes you home. Here, independence is not just encouraged, it is built with heart.
