Our History

How It Began

A Chance Meeting, a Shared Dream

More than 40 years ago, the Bedermans and the Mishners crossed paths in a movie theater lobby. Both families wanted their children with cognitive disabilities to live with dignity and independence.

A hopeful conversation grew into late-night phone calls, newspaper ads and weekly gatherings. Six months later, FIL opened its doors, and the first residents moved into a modest apartment.

Give a person the right support and you will see their potential shine.

Families Still at the Heart

FIL exists because families believed in something more: community, potential and a future built on opportunity. We carry that belief forward today.

We see families as partners. Whether your loved one is just starting to explore independence or returning after time away, we welcome every step.
