Who Lives Here

A Co-Ed Community of Adults

FIL is a co-ed community for adults with special needs who can live independently.

Residents arrive with kind hearts and a readiness for new challenges. Many have cognitive or physical disabilities that make traditional settings difficult. Here they build life skills in hands-on workshops, try work and volunteer roles, make friends at social events, and stay well through adaptive fitness.

We believe in possibility. Labels do not define our residents. Potential does.

Is FIL a Fit?

Your Loved One May Be a Great Match If They

  • Do well in a supportive setting with clear routines and friendly staff
  • Have basic daily living and self-care skills, including hygiene and household tasks
  • Enjoy social connection, group activities, outings and events
  • Want to explore work or volunteer roles and build real-world skills
  • Can share needs and preferences, in words or another way, and take part in decisions
  • Have mild to moderate medical needs that our on-site Med Room and pharmacy partner can manage
  • Have the cognitive and functional strengths to live independently with support nearby
  • Bring a friendly, community-minded spirit

We look for a good match as carefully as we look for readiness. Every placement starts with a conversation and a tour.

The Foundation for Independent Living is NOT Appropriate for All Individuals

FIL is not appropriate for individuals who have a psychiatric or serious emotional disturbance that impacts behavior and/or have serious medical conditions that require daily or weekly monitoring or intervention. FIL is an integrated community-based program, and while we do have staff who live on site, we do not offer 24-hour supervision. Individual safety and dignity are FIL’s priorities, but residents will be working and living in the community. Our residents are allowed to make decisions that affect all aspects of their lives, all of which creates a level of risk inherent to this philosophy and approach.

Please note that FIL is private pay only. We do not accept insurance, Medicaid, etc.

Every time we talk to our daughter she is happy, engaged and ready to get off the phone and back to her next activity! FIL is one of the greatest blessings in our lives.
