Our Story
A Place Where Independence Takes Root
At the Foundation for Independent Living, Inc. (FIL), we are more than a program. We are a purpose-driven community built on inclusion and the belief in every individual’s potential. From the very beginning, our mission has been clear: to create a safe, enriching space where people with cognitive and physical disabilities can thrive, grow and lead lives of independence with dignity and pride.
We understand that independence isn’t only about daily living skills. It’s about honoring each person’s individuality, nurturing their voice and creating real opportunities for personal discovery and self-confidence. At FIL, our community celebrates all differences—whether in background, culture, ability or life goals. We help each resident find meaning and connection in their unique journeys.
Our team is committed to walking alongside every resident, offering support as mentors and advocates. Through personalized coaching, structured life-skill programs, wellness activities and vocational opportunities, we help residents gain the tools they need to live a life of purpose on their own terms.
“Give a person the right support and you will see their potential shine.”

We also recognize the vital role families play in this journey. That’s why we consider families our partners—working together to guide, uplift and shape the path forward. Whether your loved one is just beginning to explore independence or returning to us after time away, we welcome every step of that process with open arms and a full heart.
FIL exists because families believed in something more: community, potential and futures built on opportunity. Today, we carry that belief forward. Our promise is to continue fostering acceptance, raising awareness and championing the contributions of individuals with disabilities—not just within our walls, but in the world beyond them. If you’re looking for a place where your loved one can be seen and truly supported, FIL is that place. Independence isn’t just encouraged. It’s lived.
Looking to the Future
At the Foundation for Independent Living, we don’t just prepare for today. We plan for every tomorrow.
We understand the hope and concern that come with choosing the right path for a loved one with a disability. That decision carries the weight of the future. We honor it with everything we do. FIL is more than a program. It is a turning point. It becomes the moment where worry is replaced by progress, where potential is no longer just a possibility but a plan.
Looking ahead, our vision is bold and grounded in purpose. We are:
Expanding both our residential and non-residential programs to reach more individuals and offer flexible options for every stage of life
Enhancing vocational opportunities that lead to real employment and a sense of purpose
Deepening wellness and medical resources so every resident has access to care that supports both body and mind
Strengthening family involvement and support with more communication, resources, and opportunities to stay engaged in their loved one’s journey
Creating spaces and experiences that empower our community to thrive socially, emotionally, and independently
Families tell us that The Foundation feels different because it is. Your loved ones are welcomed into a community that sees them fully, celebrates who they are and supports where they want to go. Whether it’s learning to cook their own meals, landing their first job or building meaningful friendships, we are there at every milestone.
If you’re looking for more than a program, if you’re looking for a place where growth, purpose and joy become part of daily life, then we encourage you to explore what’s next with FIL.
The future starts here. Let’s shape it together.
